I've been to Moanalua 99 many times in the past, but I've only recently seen this place. The prices are not as low as the other shops. But this is where the difference in quality comes in.
The food is authentic Japanese dishes. I ordered the Tempura Bento, which consists of 4 Tempura shrimp, some Tempura vegetables, miso soup, and some small little side stuff. The price is around $15. It is very tasty.
They advertised the butterfish as their best seller, so I've got to give that a try next time. -

This review is for the tempura bento.
I wasn't pleased with their tempura at all.
Batter didn't have much taste and some of the vegetables were undercooked.
The last time I ate here I had the oyako donburi which was excellent but I wouldn't order the tempura if I were to return. -

I ordered the chicken katsu donburi and it was TERRIBLE! The chicken was definitely frozen and tasted very old. There was thus freezer like taste to it. Maybe the chicken was freezer burned. I got their famous butterfish. It tasted like cuttlefish. Really old and fishy tasting. Again. I think it was reallly old food in the freezer. Will NEVER eat here again

Fair prices for pretty good food.
The butterfish is their specialty and it's delicious.
Besides that, they have many other Japanese type of boxes/plates.
lots of cute little additions to their bento boxes too.
The waiting and getting the lady's attention wasn't as big a problem as some other people are mentioning -

I ordered butterfish bento from here today. Prices kinda on the high side paid about $15 for it. I prefer ordering made to order rather than bentos that's been sitting out for while. They do have variety of made to order plates as well as bentos. Next time I will come and try their made to order food.
